House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 1: The Return of the Struggle Wigs

I want to start this blog by saying – I am a child of the Blacks, and I stand by my Queen Rhaenyra and whatever horrific things she’s about to do – so if you don’t like that – this ain’t gonna be the blog for you! Fuck them greens.

Season 1 Recap

Alright, let’s rewind to Season 1 and break it down, Black fantasy style. We were introduced to the Targaryen drama, complete with their dragons, their political shenanigans, and those infamous struggle wigs. Seriously, who thought it was a good idea to make the Targaryens look like they were wearing discount party city wigs? They were more tragic than Laena Velaryon’s death, and that’s saying something.

Season 1 was about setting up the most prominent family feud since the Hatfields and McCoys. Alliances were made and broken, dragons were flexing, and betrayal was the flavour of the season. By the finale, we were left with a kingdom ready to explode, and the Blacks and Greens preparing to throw down. And through it all, those wigs somehow survived every battle, unbothered and unscathed. Respect.

Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

Now, let’s get into the meat of Season 2, Episode 1 – “Son for a Son.” This episode felt like that calm before the storm, you know when everyone’s just plotting their next move and pretending, they’re not about to do something wild.

First up, Rhaenyra’s son Jacaerys heads North to the Wall and locks in 2000 troops from Cregan Stark. The North is about that life and is ready to back their queen. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra is mourning her other son Lucerys and heads to Storm’s End to see if she can find any trace of him. Sis is grieving hard and ready to throw hands.

Daemon, our favourite chaotic uncle, wants to avenge Lucerys and tries to recruit Rhaenys to go after Aemond and his dragon, Vhagar. But Rhaenys, being the cool-headed queen she is, tells him to chill and wait for Rhaenyra’s orders. Aegon II is over here trying to be a good king, but his granddaddy Otto is manipulating him left and right while dealing with the commoners’ drama from the Velaryons’ blockade of the Gullet.

Over at the Small Council, Aegon tries to let his son Jaehaerys have a “pony ride” on a councillor, which is just as ridiculous as it sounds. Alicent ain’t having it and Larys, the ultimate snake, plays on her fears. Back at Dragonstone, Rhaenyra wants blood for Lucerys and holds a symbolic funeral for him. It’s a touching moment that hits hard.

Mysaria, aka the White Worm, survived the brothel fire and shows up in Dragonstone, only to get arrested for treason. Daemon, never one to miss an opportunity for chaos, asks her to help him find two assassins in King’s Landing. He sneaks into the city, bribes a rat catcher and a City Watch guard to kill Aemond. When they can’t find him in the Red Keep, they bust into Helaena’s room and force her to spill the tea on her twins. They kill Jaehaerys, but Helaena manages to escape with her daughter Jaehaera and finds Alicent and Criston Cole in the middle of an affair. Drama for days.

This episode, while titled “Son for a Son,” is really about the power struggle and manipulation by two sociopaths, Daemon Targaryen and Larys Strong. These men are out here playing their own games, and it’s clear they have their sights set on ruling from behind the scenes. Daemon might have some noble goals, but he’s impulsive and dangerous.

Oh, I also see that Simp Criston Cole returns and continues to be annoying and useless for yet another season, consistency is key, I guess. My brother in Christ gets some self-respect.

And let’s not forget a shout-out to the Black folks keeping King’s Landing pressed. Lord Uncle Corlys Velaryon and crew are out here making sure the Greens don’t get too comfortable. Hopefully, y’all survive this season because the realm needs your style and sass – but Jesus be a fence with them wigs.

Buckle up, folks. This season is about to get messy.
